Increasingly farms are under pressure to mass produce food quickly in order to compete in today’s global market. Considered economically unviable with the modernisation of farming methods and intensified food production, many breeds native to the United Kingdom are therefore now endangered or extinct.
We believe that these rare breeds of livestock are worth protecting as they have a crucial part to play in a more sustainable future. Native breeds are well adapted to our climate and their local environment. As such they tend to be hardy, have fewer health issues when kept outdoors year round, and require less input. Our livestock routinely give birth without difficulty, unassisted and usually outside. The cattle, sheep and goats live largely off the land, requiring little else to thrive. To us these attributes make the genetics of the rare breeds well worth preserving.
